A business process model describes a collection of related, structured activities or tasks of the same nature in a model. A process model is a description of a process at the type level.

Business process modeling (BPM) is much applied in business process management and enterprise systems engineering where one possible use of a process model is to prescribe how things must/should/could be done (TO-BE) in contrast to (the process itself which is really) what happens (AS-IS).
