A Data Set Catalogue is an architectural building block of the EIRA Semantic view supporting the Semantic interoperability layer of the European Interoperability Framework.
It is included in the Enabler grouping Key Sharing and Reuse Enablers.

Data Set Catalogue is a specialisation of Repository. It is a collection of descriptions of data sets.

The Data Set Catalogue ABB is a key interoperability enabler / manifestation because it supports to achieve semantic interoperability by ensuring the provision and consumption of data as stated in the EIF recommendation #eif44 - Put in place catalogues of public services, public data, interoperability solutions: "Put in place catalogues of public services, public data, and interoperability solutions and use common models for describing them."

Examples

The following implementations are examples on how this specific Architecture Building Block (ABB) can be instantiated as a Solution Building Block (SBB):

  • EU Open Data Portal: The European Union Open Data Portal (EU ODP) gives access to open data published by EU institutions and bodies. All the data you can find via this catalogue are free to use and reuse for commercial or non-commercial purposes.
  • schema.org: Schema.org is a collaborative, community activity with a mission to create, maintain, and promote schemas for structured data on the Internet, on web pages, in email messages, and beyond. Schema.org vocabulary can be used with many different encodings, including RDFa, Microdata and JSON-LD. These vocabularies cover entities, relationships between entities and actions, and can easily be extended through a well-documented extension model. Over 10 million sites use Schema.org to markup their web pages and email messages. Many applications from Google, Microsoft, Pinterest, Yandex and others already use these vocabularies to power rich, extensible experiences.
